In her autobiography, My Story, she recalls sneaking away from her father's polo matches to "play tag with other like-minded truants - including Prince Andrew, who was just my age."

Young Fergie (as her friends called her) loved horseback riding and won many cups in horse shows. She and her elder sister, Jane, attended a senior boarding school that specialized in teaching ballet. Fergie didn't fit in at the school, and often cried herself to sleep. In 1972 Fergie's parents separated. Her mother remarried and moved to Argentina. Jane also married and left England. Fergie stayed with her father, who eventually remarried and had three more children.

After graduating from Queen's Secretarial College at the age of eighteen, Fergie went to work in a public relations firm in London. Later she worked for an art gallery, and then a publishing company. She says that she lived simply in a 30 pound-a-week room and wondered how to pay her bills. But she did have a jet-setting social life, and took frequent ski trips to Switzerland. Her boyfriends included a famous race car driver, Paddy McNally.

In 1985 Sarah was invited to a house party at Windsor Castle to celebrate the Royal Ascot horse races. Her romance with Prince Andrew began that week. On March 19, 1986 they became engaged, and on July 23, 1986 they were married at Westminster Abbey. They had two children, Princess Beatrice (born in 1988) and Princess Eugenie (born in 1990).

At first the red-headed, good-natured Duchess of York was popular in the press, but that soon changed. Her clothes, weight and personality were constantly criticized. She was miserable, and felt like a worldwide laughingstock. Her husband was in the Navy, and she saw him an average 42 days a year. They wanted to live together like other military couples, but his parents wouldn't permit it for security reasons. Fergie immersed herself in charity work, and also learned to fly a helicopter "to please my distant, beloved husband, to show my interest in the Royal Navy, to share Andrew's life and his dinner conversation."

The duchess's experiences as a pilot inspired her to write a series of children's books about Budgie the Little Helicopter. They eventually earned a lot of money, which came in handy because she was deeply in debt. When she and Prince Andrew separated in 1992, the queen reportedly paid Fergie's debts, but soon Fergie was in financial trouble again. She has worked hard - writing books and newspaper columns, making TV shows and commercials - to pay off her debts.

Fergie became involved with an American businessman, Steve Wyatt, and their relationship was trumpeted in the press. Fergie implies in her autobiography that they were just friends, but her former psychic advisor, Madame Vasso, claims in her book Fergie: The Very Private Life of the Duchess of York that Fergie and Wyatt had an affair.

The Duke and Duchess of York's separation was announced in March of 1992. Fergie began seeing more of another male friend, John Bryan, who also became her business advisor. In August of 1992 an English tabloid published photos of Fergie, topless, having her feet kissed by Bryan. The duchess was humiliated. Later Bryan embarrassed her further by selling lurid (and false, according to Fergie) tales of his affair with her to another tabloid.

The Yorks' divorce became official in April of 1996. Fergie and Andrew share joint custody of their children, in fact, for years they all continued to live together. Sarah had to move back into their home, Sunninghill Park, because she was deeply in debt. Despite her eventual success as an author and television personality, she and her daughters stayed at Sunninghill, in separate quarters from Andrew. In 1999 Fergie told a newspaper that there was "no reason for Andrew and I to get divorced", she even hinted that they might one day remarry.

Fergie and Andrew both continued to date other people, however, and in 2002 the duchess bought an estate in Tuscany, Italy, close to another estate owned by her former boyfriend Count Gaddo della Gherardesca. It was the first time Fergie had ever owned property. Reportedly Fergie and the count plan to turn the estate into a health spa, which they will run together.

In her autobiography Fergie says, "I was never cut out for royalty . . . I have my life back, and I will not let go of it. And I just might live rather happily ever after." Fergie
